Dept for Education announcement on vocational qualifications
You will be aware from the media that the Government has announced today (31 January) plans to implement changes in 2014 to the value afforded vocational qualifications in light of the review by Professor Alison Wolf last year.
The proposed changes mean that the number of vocational qualifications that have GCSE equivalents (and hence count towards school league tables) is reduced and that these qualifications will count for only one (rather than four) GCSE passes.
From the information we have obtained from the Department for Education we know that our Edexcel BTEC Level 2 qualifications in Public Services, Music and Engineering will continue to count towards the GCSE league tables, which is very good news.
It is anticipated that a further review of the qualifications, will take place again after 2014 and when the Key Stage 4 performance tables have been published.
We know from our own research with employers that they value the additional experience and demonstration of ability in skills including leadership, problem solving, collaborative working and good communication gained through vocational training and development.
CVQO will continue to highlight the wider social value of the qualifications it deliversand will remain committed to providing real learning and real benefits to all the young people who join our programmesand for whom vocational qualifications present a life-changing opportunity.
