Cadets go to great heights to pay respects

Air Cadets and Staff of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing, Air Training Corps
paid their respects at the memorial site on Great Carrs for the crew of Halifax LL505 FD-S while on Adventure Training in the Lake District.

Staying at the National Air Cadets Adventure Training Centre in Windermere, the cadets got to participate in many Adventures Activities, such as Climbing, Abseiling, Canoeing, Kayaking, High Ropes and Mountain Walking.

The cadets planned a High Level Walk to visit the memorial site to pay their respects to the 8 crew who died when their aircraft encountered thick cloud and crashed at the top of Great Carr.  All crew, seven Canadians and one Britain were killed on impact.  The aircraft however was almost intact when found by rescuers.  Because they could not remove it, it was cut up and pushed off into Broad Slack, where much remains today.
