2495 DF Goes Under!

Cadets from 2495 (Totton) Detached Flight were offered an incredibly rare opportunity to visit one of the United Kingdoms least seen and secret front line pieces of military hardware; A Nuclear Submarine!

HMS Trafalgar Submarine

HMS Trafalgar a Trafalgar class SSN Submarine, one of the UK’s Hunter Killer fleet came to the port of Southampton on a very rare visit. The visit was an exercise by the Royal Navy to promote RN careers and give the boat’s crew a much earned R&R break.

Our tour guide, crew member LET Sparks, took great pleasure and pride in showing the cadets around the boat, giving the cadets a valuable insight into life in the Submarine Service and a crew member of HMS Trafalgar. Cadets were introduced to Spearfish Torpedoes and also the TLAM Cruise Missiles carried as main armament aboard the boat. A particular highlight was the visit to the boat’s control room where the cadets were allowed to view the outside world from the Captain's eye view through the periscope.

2495 DF Commanding Officer Pilot Officer Gary Harding commented “This was a wonderful and incredibly rare opportunity to visit a Royal Navy Nuclear Submarine, the Cadets loved every minute of the tour, it proved a fantastic insight into the world of the submariner and future career opportunities open and available to young people considering a career in the forces”.
