Regional Drill Competition Winners 2007

On Sunday 7th October, City of Winchester Squadron won the South West Region drill competition for the 4th consecutive time, held at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire.

The Squadron conducted yet more meticulous preparations in order to ensure victory for a 4th time. The time dedicated by the cadets and staff paid dividends in the results that were attained on the day; dropping only 3 marks in the uniform inspection and achieving 756 points out of a possible 800 for the overall score, 50 points above the 2nd runners up.

The uniform quality set by the team certainly made an impression on the judges and was noted as being a brilliant example of the standard of uniform expected of team turning up to win the day. The sequence itself went well, despite the blinding sun, and the smartness and determination of the cadets involved was displayed throughout each movement of the sequence, right from the very moment they stepped onto the parade square.

CWO Brickwood achieved 2nd runner up in the Drill Coordinator competition having dropped only 2 points out of 75 attainable; being beaten only by Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing Drill NCO. This however has not dampened spirits among the cadets who maintain a high level of moral going into Corps Finals in November.

The Corps Drill competition will be held at RAF Halton on November 17th. This is a highly charged competition, as this is the ultimate culmination and test in drill training, uniform preparation and cadets' nerves. WO Holdaway stated “Conducting drill in the ‘SHED’ at Halton is very difficult as the surface is not traditional tarmac and has large spectator audience who sit on the edge of the square”. The spectators that sit in the stands range from cadets’ parents, to Squadron officers, HQAC Officers and assessing the drill are Warrant Officers from the RAF Regiment; who ensure the high standards expected at the Corps competition are maintained.
