2412 Cadets Climb New Heights in the Peaks

Cadets and Staff from 2412 Sqn recently set off for a rock climbing trip to the world famous Stanage Edge in the Peak District. The weather did not look too good as we set off for the long drive, with cries of ‘Are we nearly there yet’ starting well before half way. We arrived just before midnight and quickly put up our tents and got our heads down.

Saturday morning brought indifferent weather as we set off to find our first route. It was the first experience of outside climbing for most Cadets and after fighting with harnesses and helmets we were ready for the first climb. We endured rain and wind in the morning session before retiring to Hathersage (nearest village) for tea, cake, chips and a look around the gear shops. The afternoon session prooved drier with less rain and we managed another 3 or 4 routes before it was time to head back to the camp site.

Sunday promised to be a better day and we awoke to a clear blue sky. As we approached our first route of the morning we were greeted by a dead sheep at the foot of the climb so we quickly found an alternative. More climbs quickly followed with some tricky moves testing the Cadets nerve and agility. We basked in the sun in between routes and took in the glorious views across the high Peaks.  It was soon time to collect our things and start the long journey home. We all had an excellent weekend and are looking forward to the next visit.
