RAFA and 1213 Squadron get fell in!

Three generations of the Royal Air Force came together on Thursday 12 March as members of the 1213 (Andover) Squadron gave a presentation to members of the RAF Association (RAFA).

The presentation was arranged by one of today’s RAF servicemen - Squadron Leader Darren Henry.

The occasion was the monthly meeting of the RAFA Andover Branch and before an audience of ex-RAF personnel the cadets demonstrated Marching, Radio Techniques and Drumming.

Then - risking the heart rate of some of those present - they called for volunteers from the audience to undertake some ‘Square bashing’ - for many, it was the first time in 40 or 50 years!

The evening saw an age range of nearly 70 years - with the youngest cadet Zach Prince (13) standing in line with Air Vice-Marshal John Bowring (ret'd), 85!

The evening also brought back memories for several of the older members present - the Branch Chairman, Keith Burrows revealed that his brother Donald had been a member of 1213 Sqn in 1947, whilst another member, Roy Warwick ‘topped’ that by stating that he himself had been a member of 1213 Sqn in 1941!

There is a long history between the two organisations, with the Mace which the ATC Squadron uses having been provided by the RAFA Andover Branch in memory of Squadron Leader (Nobby) Clark.

Both organisations are keen to attract new members.
